• The continuing saga of me not getting an iphone

My contract is up on my 18month old Nokia E71. And I’m still no nearer working out what I’m going to get next. I suppose I don’t have to, but it’s scratched screen and bunged up charger socket (the charger doesn’t positively click in place as it’s got some gunk in there, so I have to make sure it’s pushed in hard or it won’t charge) mean that it’s becoming a pain to live with, but I do like it.
I like it’s small skinny size. It’s pretty tiny really. Thin, I can have it in my pocket and not know it’s there. They keyboard works great, I can one hand it when I’m, well, not when I’m driving of course, but when I’m doing something with my other hand…

So iphone4? Maybe. I was delighted to find out my mother-in-law doesn’t have a 4, she has a 3G. And that friend of my wife’s who’s husband said he’d got her a “2nd hand iphone4” actually had got her a 3G… not that I’m a snob or anything.

HTC Desire Z was looking good until I saw about “that cursed hinge” and it does look a bit bobbins.

But – I really like the HTC brand now – I think their website is class – http://www.htc.com/uk – and the HTCSense stuff that they do looks brilliant. http://www.htc.com/uk/product/desirez/overview.html

Apple’s iOS thing with lack of real multitasking, battery drain and super-pretty just bugs me. The iPad drives me a bit nuts, unless I’m using it for watching teh telly on in’t bath or something. To use it as a computery thing – no… I can’t skip about… I mean with one hand on my E71 I can check emails coming in whilst web pages are loading, whilst twitter is twittering.

I’ll end up getting an E72 I bet.

Dont forget the X10 pro. Maybe a bit small, but pretty Nokiaesk IMO. I don’t have one yet, but the old Nok is getting grotty

See, I really, really like Nokia Messaging. Works great. Proper push email, IMAP synching. It’s too hard.

seriously have a good look at an Android unit. I too love HTC phones and am on my 3rd – Legend.

Android gives full IMAP support, plenty of apps and Froyo (2.2) supports flash now.

Lovely GUI and no problem flicking around between apps.

Id also consider a samsung galaxy S.

If you’re worried about battery, no android is any better than an iPhone, IMO. If anything, worse.

Another vote for HTC. I swapped from the iPhone to Android (with LG hardware) and love the OS but hated the phone. Tried Samsung but it felt too cobbled together and am now on the baby HTC while I wait for my network to get stock of the Desire HD.

Love Apple products but they’ll need to do something pretty spectacular to get me back as an iPhone user.

I’ll be replacing my iPhone with an HTC Android phone once my contract expires. Thinking about a HTC Desire HD … or whatever its equivalent is in 12 months time (when my contract actually runs out) – but very unlikely to get another iPhone … over-rated and over-priced … and I’m just not an Apple guy.

Forget Desire Z and go for iPhone or Desire (or HD) I had HTC Touch Pro 2 with key pad and hated it. Once u get used to touch pad that’s all you’ll use.

I’ve never had anything other than a simple phone. So making the leap straight for a top-end smartphone is fairly intimidating – especially as (unless I want to splash out £500 up front) I’m stuck with my decision for 18 months.
I’m not usually a herd follower, but I have to say the ubiquity of the iPhone is also it’s strength and it’s pulling me in at the moment.

Why not look at a new Windows Phone 7? HTC make them and initial reviews look good. I’ve got an E72 which I’m not impressed with (too many clicks to do things), so I’m upgrading next week to an HTC Mozart
